Those two ultimately remained in the Premier League, while Arsene Wenger claimed that Lemar rejected a move to London in favour of remaining in the principality, where he would have Champions League football to look for…

Hart backs ´incredibly strong´ Three Lions for Euro 2024 glory

England are incredibly strong and definitely good enough to go all the way at Euro 2024, insists former Three Lions goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Gareth Southgate s side, who were runners-up to Italy at the delayed Euro 2020, are among the favourites to go one better and lift the Henri Delaunay trophy in Germany this year, and there is envious quality within their ranks.

Jude Bellingham played a starring role during his debut season with Real Madrid, with Harry Kane following suit at Bayern Munich, while Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and John Stones are fresh from winning a record-breaking fourth successive Premier League title with Manchester City.

Hart, who recently announced his retirement from professional football, represented England at two European Championships in 2012 …

Mauricio Pochettino: Chelsea would have struggled in Europe because of injuries

Mauricio Pochettino said he doubts whether Chelsea could have handled a European campaign this season as he has grappled with an injury crisis.

The Argentinian could be without 11 players for Monday’s game against Everton, with Enzo Fernandez and Raheem Sterling the latest doubts for the meeting at Stamford Bridge.

It has been the club’s first campaign without European competition since 2016/17, and only their second since 1996/97, following a 12th-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Colorado Rapids v New York Red Bulls: Armas says past results count for nought

The Colorado Rapids are seeking a fifth straight home win when they face the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, but coach Chris Armas says their previous results will count for nothing if they do not execute on the day.

Colorado sit fourth in the Western Conference, six points behind leaders Los Angeles FC, after winning five of their last six games (one defeat).

At DICK S Sporting Goods Park, they have won their last four matches against Austin FC (2-0), CF Montreal (4-1), Sporting Kansas City (2-1) and St. Louis City (4-1).

Armas, however, says all that good work could easily be undone if they do not understand how to combat the Red Bulls high-pressing style.

It s five out of the last six that we ve won but this is the past. We have to reset and be ready …

Sissoko: France will come back stronger after Euro 2016 heartbreak

While bemoaning France s lack of luck in Sunday s Euro 2016 final defeat to Portugal, disappointed midfielder Moussa Sissoko said his team-mates will come back stronger.

Hosts France were unable to make it over the final hurdle in their bid for a third European Championship crown at the Stade de France, stunned 1-0 by Portugal after extra time in Paris.

Despite losing captain Cristiano Ronaldo to injury in the first half, Portugal emerged triumphant thanks to substitute Eder s 109th-minute strike, after Sissoko had come close, while Andre-Pierre Gignac almost scored a stoppage-time winner in regulation as his shot hit the post.

Speaking afterwards, Sissoko said: There is a lot of disappointment and sadness in the locker room because we did a very good match.

Cafu and Dida back Vinicius for Ballon d´Or

Vinicius Junior deserves to win this year s Ballon d Or, in the opinion of two Brazil greats.

Cafu and Dida were part of the Brazil squad that won the World Cup in 2002.

Vinicius was unable to inspire Brazil to glory at this year s Copa America, missing their quarter-final tie against Uruguay due to suspension, but has been in fine form for Real Madrid over the past 12 months.

And with neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo involved in the voting, there will be a new winner of the Ballon d Or for the first time since Luka Modric collected the 2018 award.

Vinicius is among the favourites, and Cafu feels the award should go to the Madrid star.

Yes, he deserves to win it, he’s had a great season, Cafu told Stats Perform at Festival dello Sport…

England beat Ukraine, on track for 2010 World Cup

John Terry s late winner ensured England took another significant step towards next year s World Cup finals after a 2-1 win over Ukraine here on Wednesday.

Terry s 84th-minute goal ensured Fabio Capello s squad reached the half-way stage in their campaign to reach South Africa with five wins out of five in Group Six, and maintained their five-point lead over Croatia, 2-0 winners over Andorra earlier in the day.

England just about deserved the three points but the outcome hung in the balance after Andriy Shevchenko came off the bench to cancel out Peter Crouch s first-half strike with just over quarter of an hour left.

Capello admitted his side had been below par but said the win had been testimony to their character.

It was not a rich game, a little bit…

Arsenal 3-1 Southampton: Saka stars in Gunners´ 400th Premier League home win

Arsenal came from a goal down to earn their 400th Premier League home win as they overcame a plucky Southampton 3-1 at Emirates Stadium.

Cameron Archer stunned the hosts in the 55th minute, firing a low effort into the bottom corner after being picked out by Mateus Fernandes’ raking pass.

But the Gunners responded three minutes later through Kai Havertz, who continued his scoring streak at the Emirates with a fierce strike beyond his former team-mate Aaron Ramsdale.

The comeback was complete 10 minutes later when Bukayo Saka’s teasing delivery to the back post found substitute Gabriel Martinelli.

Saka himself then sealed the triumph with a fine first-time finish, with Arsenal remaining third, behind Liverpool and Manchester City, while Southampton sit…
