Bayern Munich 1-2 Freiburg: Late Holer penalty stuns Tuchel´s hosts in DFB-Pokal

Lucas Holer s last-gasp penalty saw Freiburg snatch a dramatic 2-1 victory against Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals to end Thomas Tuchel s hopes of a domestic double.

The tie appeared to be headed to extra time, until Jamal Musiala handled Nicolas Hofler s strike, enabling Holer to secure a shock win.

Bayern had looked the likelier of the two teams to claim a late winner, after seeing Dayot Upamecano s first-half header cancelled out by Hofler s excellent volley.

It means Tuchel, in his second game since replacing Julian Nagelsmann, will miss out of the chance of both Bundesliga and Pokal glory as Christian Streich s side proceed to the last four.

The hosts had very much looked the stronger of the two sides throughout, and had been rewarded for their early dominance when Upamecano headed home Joshua Kimmich s corner in the 19th minute.

Freiburg needed only eight minutes for a surprise equaliser though, with Hofler steering a superb half-volley across Yann Sommer to level matters up just before the half-hour mark.

With the spectre of an extra half-hour looming over the horizon, Bayern intensified their siege after the interval, with Benjamin Pavard crashing a header against the crossbar.

Yet they could not find an answer, and when a rare Freiburg counter caught Musiala on his raised arm as he turned to block, the damage was done.

Holer stepped up to strike home from the spot as Sommer went the wrong way, and with it, kept the visitors in the mix for a second DFB-Pokal final in as many seasons.
